Interest in new Columbus center runs high at Gayfest
The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered Community Service Center of Greater Columbus was welcomed with open arms by attendees of the annual Gayfest at Bicentennial Park in downtown Columbus. Interest rose as high as the temperatures as 90 new members signed up in the course of a couple of hours.
"If the response at the March is any indication, Columbus is eager to see this commu-
nity center established and providing services quickly," said Marc Conte, spokesperson for the center.
People were especially pleased at being able to become members of the center for as little at $5.00. The center is waiving the fee for people unable to pay.
"It would be ludicrous for a membership fee to be the reason that people are not involved with a community center," Conte
said. "Everyone counts and no one should be made to feel as if they cannot participate in community because of income."
The center also helped to raise a few hundred dollars to go towards bail money for the women arrested at the march for being bare-chested. While this drew attention away from the membership drive, the bail fell well within the scope of what the center hopes to accomplish.
"This action is an example of how the center will advocate on behalf of people in times of need,” said Conte. “Not only were the charges against the women unfounded, but the women were subsequently severely mistreated by the arresting officers. It would
have been irresponsible for us to turn our backs in neglect. Obviously a large number of marchers who donated money and expressed support felt the same way.”
With Pride month over, the Center's leaders now turn their attention to the potluck and open meeting. This will take place, rain or shine, at an open-air pavilion at Whetstone Park of Roses in Clintonville on Saturday, August 19. The potluck begins at noon with the meeting portion beginning promptly at 1:00 pm. Preliminary drafting of a constitution and further work on fundraising initiatives will be discussed. Join the Center in the park and bring your dish, covered or otherwise.
Ohio House bill would restrict sex education
by Bill Henderson
When the Ohio House reconvenes in October, many representatives will be working to radically restrict by law how Ohio's young people are taught about human sexuality. House Bill 89, spon-
sored by State Rep. Mike Wise of Chagrin Falls, is supported by ultraconservatives and local chapter affiliates of Christian Coalition, Focus on the Family, and American Family Association, now organized across Ohio.
level to stigmatize non-heterosexual behavior and to encode their restrictive view of acceptable behaviors as the norm against which all individuals are to be judged. In Ohio, this particular unwarranted legal intrusion into individual lives will also endanger young people by promoting ignorance about potential diseases and how to avoid them except through not having sexual behavior!

This bill is intended to restrict access to information by requiring that parents must request in writing that their child should receive sexuality education; by severely restricting what information could be covered; and by outlawing most discussion of prevention of diseases, pregnancy prevention, and diversity of orientation. Ohio law currently provides a parent the right to withdraw a child from sex education classes and also mandates that these classes teach children about the dangers of and how to prevent sexually transmitted diseases-including AIDS. These would be reversed under the new bill.

The phrase "Parental Rights" is the language of debate adopted by these ultraconservatives to make such restric-
tions on education sound more acceptable. It is the same manipulation technique behind the phrase "Special Rights" created by these same forces to make discrimina. tion against non-heterosexuals sound acceptable. H.B. 89 actually restricts peoples rights, not expands them, and potentially endangers lives of their children.
On Monday, August 21 at 7:00 pm at the Cleveland Lesbian Gay Center, Stonewall Cleveland will provide an opportunity to discuss H.B. 89 and its potential impact. The Center is located at 1418 W. 29th St. at Detroit Ave. in Cleveland. John Corlett of Planned Parenthood of Greater Cleveland will be our guest. Please, join us!
